Rest well George Kell

Posted on 24th March 2009 by John in Uncategorized

While I was growing up, my summers were filled with Tiger baseball. A lot of my time was spent with my father, working in the yard where the radio carried the voice of the great Ernie Harwell or we might be in the garage watching a small TV tuned to channel 4 while George Kell and Al Kaline gave their commentary.Today a legend of Tiger baseball, George Kell (86) has passed away.
George Kell was a Detroit Tiger broadcaster for nearly forty years and from 1943-1957 he played with the Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. He actually beat out the great Ted Williams by a few percentage points for the 1949 batting crown, hitting .34291 while the Boston Red Sox great finished at .34276. Ten times he was an All-Star while playing third base.
He was truly a great man and loved the Tigers. Heaven has found another player for their angelic team. Rest well.

New Sports Talk “60″ Fans

Posted on 19th March 2009 by John in Uncategorized

The Hale family (John, Cori, Bradley and Jack) came by the Romulus Fire Station #2 for a tour last Tuesday. It was the day of a downpour and they had to come from South Lyon, I believe. They were somewhat late, but they managed to get there.
While talking with them, I found that they were sports fans and I suggested they listen to our show. I heard they did tune in last Friday and hopefully they’ll listen to us every week. We are glad to have them join our ST60 family and wish them well.

Corey Smith

Posted on 6th March 2009 by John in Uncategorized

Everyone here at Sports Talk “60″ would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the families affected in the tragedy involving Detroit lion Corey Smith, NFL player Marquis Cooper and Will Bleakley.
Covering the lions, Chip and I get a chance to talk to these guys at camp and practice, and it hurts when something like this happens. Let’s hope that a miracle occurs and they are found.
Our prayers also are sent to Nick Schuyler in hopes of a full recovery. Please keep them all in your thoughts.

Sometimes a Balloon is not just a Balloon!

Posted on 11th December 2008 by John in Uncategorized
My Thursday is normally spent covering sporting news, doing errands or general relaxing. Today was no different, as I covered the Detroit Ignition at practice in the morning. After that, I caught a little sports radio, then ran across town and visited my favorite weekly stores. When I returned home there was total turmoil, It seems that my daughter had lost her red balloon, it was blown right out of the car. There were tears, screaming and a head rested on my leg with the words, “find it daddy”, muttered over and over.
What could I do? I had no choice. Since the rocket I would normally use is in the shop I couldn’t soar up into the skies to find it. The next idea I came up with was to find a plain red balloon. I hurried into a florist shop on Wayne road in Westland and thought for sure all I would find was a “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations on your Retirement”. Even though Nat can’t read yet, she would know that it wasn’t the same. (more…)

Firefighters Battle for Charity

Posted on 6th December 2008 by John in Uncategorized
Over the past two weeks I have been a part of some great charity events with the Romulus firefighters. On November 26th we played the Halecreek Elementary staff in the 1st annual Turkey Flag Football Bowl and came out with a victory. Last night, Dec 4th, the Romulus firefighters took on Merriman Elementary staff and parents in a basketball game at Merriman school. The outcome was not in our favor last night. Kudos to the Merriman team for their victory, although at both events the victory was for the Romulus Goodfellows and their efforts to make sure “no child is without a Christmas”. The Halecreek event raised over $200 plus toys and at Merriman we received over (3) big boxes of wonderful toys. Some proceeds from concessions and a collection went to a young Merriman student who was injured a few weeks ago.
I would like to extend my thanks to the staff, parents and kids of both schools who played, and those who rooted everyone on. A special thanks to the Romulus fire fighters who came out on their own time for this good cause. Lt Mike Wojtylko, Kevin Krause, Andy Ellis, Drew McNeil, Matthew Wilhide, Todd Tingstad, Jason Pittman, Bud McDiarmid, , Mike Gubaci (his family also, who took pics for us), fire pup, and joining us from Metro Airport  Fire Dept., Kevin Wojtylko. A special thanks to Jerry Frayer for a great job at the ref spot and his son for playing with our team. I’m proud to be associated with these guys, as they show such dedication to these causes that are so important to our City. Also, a thank you to our Romulus Cable people for being there. I hope to work with these guys again in my next adventure.

  • More about our Wild Bills Show

Posted on 29th October 2008 by John in Uncategorized

Upon arriving at Wild Bills, a two story sports bar, Chip and I headed on up to the 2nd floor near the stairs to set up for our play-by-play. We hadn’t realized that the plans were changed due to a pre-booked party. As we were hustled downstairs to a spot near the front entrance we realized our good fortune. (more…)

Karen Newman, “Voice of the Red Wings”

Posted on 21st October 2008 by John in Uncategorized

I promised to post the photo taken of Karen Newman and me, so here it is. For those of you who don’t know Karen, she is “the voice of the Red Wings”, as she sings the national anthem before all of the home games. She is also a down to earth, first class lady.
