Memories Blossom with the Spring
As I’m starting to write this post, there is a hint of spring around the corner and I wonder what memories this season stirs in you. There is still snow on the ground, but next week the ST60 crew is off to Florida to cover our Tigers and various other Major League ball clubs.
When I was a kid I couldn’t wait for the Tigers to start spring training. I knew that I would soon be spending time with my dad, watching Tiger baseball or listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio. My dad worked hard his whole life and even on his days off we would work together in the garden or the garage, but the radio would always be tuned to WJR and Tiger baseball. That was a connection I always had with my father who was born in a different time and world.
Even today, close to eighty years old he makes his comments about what they should do or who isn’t performing. I can talk to my father for hours about baseball and it makes no difference that I do a sports show, he always thinks he’s right.
Please, tell us what spring training or baseball has meant to you. Till next time….

I think I’m gonna cry!! I remember sitting with my grandpa and dad listening to the games. Watching George and Al on Channel 4. Skipping school with a buddy and my gf in high school and buying bleacher seats at Tiger Stadium (and hoping the car would still be there when we came out!!). Parking and walking across I-75 to get to the stadium. Squeezing our beat up cars into the Firestone parking lot off Michigan Avenue. The 84 Tigers and Bless You Boys! Wishing I was old enough to go to Opening Day…… Now it’s sitting with my wife and daughter in left field. Wishing I was too young to go to Opening Day but glad I’m not!! The taste of a cold $8 Bud Lite and $4 hot dog. Fantasy camp at Comerica Park and drinking with Dave Rozema!! SportsTalk60 and media passes. Good memories, great friends, and Tiger Baseball!! GO TIGERS!

Both awesome memories. I myself couldnt wait to hear Ernie’s voice on the radio in the summer. It was just like heaven. Still to this day its hard to imagine a Tiger game without him. I also remember that sticky floor at old Tiger stadium. was always covered with soda or something. Your shoes would just stick to it.

Hey Chip - Wasn’t that before they actually called it Tiger Stadium. Was there an upper deck or did you watch thru the ole wooden fence? Who was the nine year old with the autographed ball and why didn’t you get one? Oh the memories……

Just sitting here in the Kave waiting for John to show up so we can get the roadtrip started. Running on a tight schedule as usual. Thought I’d check out the site…….Hard to forget Herbie dancing around the bases with his broom during the 7th inning stretch. Funny how now they clean the infield and switch bases every 2 or 3 innings. My how things have changed.
