The great thing about hosting our Sportstalk “60″ show is that we don’t have to cover just one sport. Last night Chip and I decided to attend the opener of the 2009/2010 Roller Derby season here in Detroit.
Now, you may be asking yourself, “do we have a team … a league? Well, the answer to both of those questions is a resounding YES. In fact the Detroit Derby Girls (DDG) are in their 5th season with four Detroit teams and a travel team.
It was the Pistol Whippers and D-Funk Allstars who kicked off the season, and on December 12th the Detroit Pistoffs will tangle with the Devil’s Night Dames. With the Drew Barrymore movie “Whip It” (filmed in Detroit), coming out soon, the popularity of Roller Derby should grow.
There were nearly a thousand spectators at the Masonic Temple “Drill Hall” in Detroit, where the Detroit Derby Girls play when they are in town. Playing to a crowd that pretty much filled the hall to capacity, the D-Funk Allstars won by a score of 175 to 69.
When you check out a new sport for the first time it is a learning experience. I caught on quickly about the Jammer, Blocker and Pivot, but I have to learn more about the penalties.
We had a great time watching the crowd get into the game, supporting their favorite skaters like: Diesel Doll, Black Eyed Skeez (last night’s MVP), Roxanna Hardplace, Cats Meow, Honey Suckit, Tinja, Sista Slitchya and all the others.
We would like to thank the DDG for inviting us, and Vicious Vixen for being our media connection. Try making it down to the Masonic Hall for some Roller Derby action, you won’t be disappointed.

Rules to win a Sportstalk “60″ prize on Chip’s Challenge:
You must make a pick from each of the same games that Chip has picked from and send your picks to Sportstalk60@comcast.net by the kickoff on Sunday (1:00pm). If there is a tie, the over/under on Monday Nights game will decide.
Last week I filmed another episode for Lee Martins, “Midnight Hour”. The episode, called “Diary of the Mantis”, wrapped up shooting on Sunday evening. It’s my second episode for the horror series that airs on Comcast.
Also, I was in a commerical for a Credit Union on Wednesday which should air during the winter olympics. So it was a full week for my life as an actor.
This Saturday don’t forget that Chip and I will beat “Jakes Again”, in Wayne, for the Michigan/OSU game. This is a critical game for Michigan. Hope to see ya there!
The Sports Talk ‘60′ crew was at Casey’s in Walled Lake on Monday, passing out some great stuff from Fanatic U. Chip and I were firing off trivia questions while Casey’s patrons were just as quick with the answers, taking home everything we brought.
The food was also going quickly as Casey brought over some awesome sampler dishes of his great food. In case you didn’t already know, there is a sushi bar inside the Irish sports pub, and the Japanese shrimp, dumplings and eggrolls were excellent. It made me forget about wings (although that’s on the menu too).
We want to thank the new friends we met and talked with. Tune in Friday.
I must apologize for the previous post (Chips Challenge – 11/13/09). I am in no way trying to condone the mix-up that happened but, I would like you to understand where I stand in regards to this blog.
As the Administrator I have to admit to being what is normally referred to as a geek. This means that when I put together “Chips Challenge” I have little or no knowledge as to what the team names are or who is playing who. But, being a geek, that means I researched the problem and figured that I should get the betting line and put them in that order with Chips picks in Bold. That seems to have been working so far, but this last time the combination of 4:30am (another geek trait) and the betting line and Chips picks seem to have gotten scrambled. I know I checked it at least two times after I had finished it, but it still didn’t register. I promise to try to do better in the future.
On another note, I actually did get to attend a football game with my daughter Saturday. It was the “Peanut Bowl” of the Downriver Junior Football League that was being hosted by Romulus. In the Junior Varsity game the Romulus Flyers beat the Washtenaw Blue Wolverines by a score of 43 to 0. The Wolverines attempted to score in the final minutes, but the Flyers stopped them at the goal line and then marched it down the field for a final six points.
In case you are thinking that maybe I’m going to lose my geek status, I was actually at the game to check on the video crew that was taping the game and to take photos of the game, the last of which I am just now sending in to our local paper at (again) 4:36 am.
