A Day in the Press Box

Posted on 3rd October 2009 by John in Sports talk

We are asked by many, what it’s like to be in the press box during games. They seem to think that it must be an awesome experience and we would be the first to admit that it really is. We truly enjoy sports talk radio because we are able to talk with our listeners about what’s going on in the world of Detroit sports.

A typical day covering a sports event begins when we enter the ballpark, arena or field to obtain our media pass and sign in. Since the Tigers are rallying in the post season I will talk about that. If we want to watch batting practice and stand on the field and talk to the players we arrive about 2 1/2 hours before the game. Then we sign in and make our way to the basement of Comerica Park and enter the field through the visitors clubhouse. On a typical night game (7:05 start) the Tigers start batting practice at 4:30 and then the visiting team takes the field around 5:15. The grounds crew usually clear the field between 6:15 and 6:30 to get the field ready. From the field we head up to the press box where Ron the usher awaits with a smile, and once again you sign in. In the press box we grab a bite to eat, and try to locate a good seat for the game. My favorite is a seat right at the window.

If you don’t want to sit in the press box there are two lounges with tables and televisions to watch the game. The food is always great, and seeing everyone in the media world is awesome. Everyone talks trivia, great plays, and remembering players of old. Some are busy typing away on their laptops, working intently on getting their story to the editor for print. Some media people are giving live updates to their respected radio stations and some are just immersed  in watching a great game.. All in all there is nothing like it. I am honored to get a chance to do this and then talk about it on the show with our listeners.

  2. Having been in the Press Box, I would have to agree with most of what John says. He didn’t tell you that the view is great from the front row. It truly is!! And the food is good, but you have to pay for it. Nothing is free anymore, except fountain pop. And as much fun as it is to be on the radio and see the media personnel from TV and such, if you aren’t famous or well known, most of them don’t even say hi to you. Not sure how the rest of the Detroit sports teams treat their media and fans, but the Tigers are top notch!!
